Arriving in La Paz at 3500m could be a shock to the system, but with a carefully calculated program and room for acclimatisations, it will not be long before you can enjoy the freedom of riding some of the most exhilarating downhills and passes the world has to offer. A variety of riding styles and terrain as diverse as the culture and sounds of the vibrant city of La Paz.

Bolivia, the mythical birthplace of the sun, shines like a jewel on the western flank of the South American continent. Bursting with some of the most diverse ecosystems in the world and eco regions ranging from rainforests and dry valleys to tropical savannah and the famous Altiplano.

Located in the shadow of Mt Illimani 6438m, La Paz is the highest administrative city in the world at a altitude of 3500m above sea level. History and myth thread through every part of the country; elevated by the Andes, shrouded by the rainforest and shaped by its many rivers and lakes.

1

Arrival in La Paz

Description:

Upon arrival we will be transferred to our hotel conveniently located in the centre of La Paz City.

Depending on your arrival time, we will discover our surrounds and assemble our bikes and equipment for the adventure that awaits. We ease into the day, arriving at 3500m above sea level, we drink lots of water to ensure we acclimatise well. We’ll enjoy a welcome dinner in the evening at a great local restaurant.

La Paz > Soul Trail > Palca

Today’s Ride:

25 – 30 km / Gravel roads, Jeep track / Breakfast, lunch, dinner / Hotel

Description:

After breakfast we’ll get picked up at our hotel as we head south to enjoy the unique scenery and explore the hidden beauty of La Paz’s backyard, some of the most beautiful valleys tucked away in the Andean mountains. Our half day ride takes us away from traffic and onto the Soul trail. This is the perfect ride to kick-start our trip and adjust to the altitude with some easy downhill  and jaw dropping views. We’ll cycle from the Valley of the Souls, through picturesque farming towns down to Palca Canyon, where incredible stalactite formations give way to 100m high towering stone walls. We reach the small town Palca, forgotten by time.

World’s Most Dangerous Road – WMDR

Today’s Ride:

65 km / Gravel road / Breakfast, lunch, dinner / Eco-Lodge

Description:

An early pick-up from the hotel and an hour transfer, its your turn to ride the Yungas road. This road, also know as “Death Road” or the Worlds Most Dangerous Road is one of the most famous downhill rides in the world. This epic descend of note will take you from the wind swept La Cumbre at 4700m down all the way  to Yolosa at 1200m.

We stop for a break to cool down before entering the jungle and the most challenging part of the ride. This infamous narrow dirt road is cut precariously into the side of the mountain and descends 2000m with 1000m sheer drops off to our left and rock overhangs with waterfalls to our right. We reach Yolosa at the end of this epic drop where we will spend the night and enjoy dinner at an eco-lodge and wildlife sanctuary La Senda Verde.

Yolosa > Chulumani

Today’s Ride:

70 km / Cross Country / Breakfast, lunch, dinner / Hotel

Description:

We start from La Senda Verde and head over to Chulumani, the capital of the South Yungas region in Bolivia, where agriculture dominates the area with the production of bananas, coffee, and cocoa leaves. We tackle about 8 hours of cross-country riding including two longer sustained climbs. After an amazing day of riding, we reach our beautiful accommodation with a jacuzzi, a bar and restaurant for a well deserved kick back and relax.

Chulumani > El Castillo del Loro > Ghost Ride > La Paz

Today’s Ride:

50 km / Gravel road, single track / Breakfast, lunch, dinner / Hotel

Description:

Biking from Chulumani to the castle in the South Yungas region called El Castillo del Loro.
En route we pass through tiny villages with a few stone edifices, stop at scenic spots and have the opportunity to play on the bike. This part of the trail offer small drops and jumps abound. Specialist advice will be on hand to explain riding techniques if needed. Some great photo opportunities presents itself with great views across the valley and 2 amazing waterfalls before the get our fist climbs of the castle. The castle was build by Paraguayan prisoners of war during the Chaco War (1932-1935) at the behest of then president of Bolivia, José Luís Tejada Sorzano. After taking in a bit of the haunted history, we transfer to by bus to Pongo, a small country  settlement where trout is farmed. After sampling some trout for lunch we transfer back to La Paz.

La Paz  > Copacabana > Lake Titicaca

Today’s Ride:

150 km / Support vehicle close at hand / Breakfast, lunch, dinner / Hotel

Description:

Today´s ride is a test of endurance as we set off to explore Copacabana and Lake Titicaca in a unique and adventurous way. We head up to the bustling city of El Alto, to 4200m above sea level. From here we begin our ride up to Copacabana, a beautiful Bolivian town located at more than 3800m above sea level, known for it’s quaint atmosphere and its amazing views of Lake Titicaca.

We will monitor and evaluate how we all are adapting to the altitude and conditions on the day. Those that are feeling very strong can aim to complete the full distance and the rest can hop on the support vehicle that is always close.

On route we will board Bolivia’s famous wooden barges onto which cars, trucks and even  buses  are  loaded  to  be  ferried  across  the  Strait  of Tiquina. Following the riding we will be rewarded with the impressive sight of Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world.

We enjoy lunch before we load onto a boat and ride out to the Isla del Sol (Sun Island), and explore a bit of the island where there are over 80 ruins dating back to the Inca period. The scenery of the Island, surrounded by Lake Titicaca and its deep blue water with the distant snow peaks of the Illampu, Condoriri, Huayna Potosi and Illimani, is simply breath-taking.

Copacabana > Laja

Today’s Ride:

55 km / Cross Country / Breakfast, lunch, dinner / Hotel

Description:

We take a boat back to the mainland, where we will have a chance to do some more riding and explore Copacabana, visiting the Church of the Virgin of Copacabana which is by far the most important catholic sanctuary in Bolivia. We climb the steps to the top of El Calvario, a hilltop from where one can enjoy a spectacular view of Lake Titicaca and Copacabana.

After lunch, we take another ferry from the other side of Copacabana, crossing to the other side of the mainland before biking  to Laja, the town where La Paz was originally founded by Alonzo de Mendoza in 1548. Laja is famous for the old church which stands in the middle of its only plaza. After sampling some of the famous local flat cakes we load up and head back to La Paz for an hour transfer.
